Haflas

A hafla is an Egyptian dance party.  We have haflas two or three times a year, normally associated with weekends of workshops with visiting teachers.
A Hafla gives us the opportunity to show off the belly dancing we have learned to each other.  It must be remembered that belly dancing is fundamentally a performance art, and it's  a joyful moment when you first develop the confidence to perform for your peers, whether in a group or solo.
Also Haflas give us the opportunity to socialise with each other and with dancers and teachers from other parts of the East Anglian area - and indeed from all over the country in some cases.
We are just bringing in a system whereby there is a choice of whether you have a supper or merely nibbles - some dancers prefer not to eat a "meal" during Haflas because it impairs their dancing, whereas many non-dancing spectators particularly enjoy having a meal as part of their evening.  There is now a two-tier pricing system to accomodate this.
Although our Haflas are not advertised to the general public, everyone is welcome, including spouses, other halves, and other family members and non-dancing friends.  All we ask is that these people respect that the primary purpose of the evening is dance, but nobody is forced to get up and boogie if they don't want to!  Don't worry, there are always enough people eager to show off (you know the types, as soon as the fridge light comes on they are performing!) so if you want to blend into the background and watch, that's not a problem.
Although there isn't usually a bar selling alcohol on Sunday evenings at North Walsham Community Centre, everyone is welcome to bring their own drink if they want.  There are liberal amounts of bottled water usually supplied for the thirsty dancers.
Last (but by no means.....) is the opportunity to shop till you (hopefully don't) drop!  There is always a really good bazaar at our Haflas, brought to you by a renowned bellydance costume supplier, selling everything from beginners hip scarves to expensive bejewelled cabaret two-piece costumes.  As ever, it's up to you - there is no pressure or obligation to buy at these affairs, but if you are in a shopping mood it's bellydance costume heaven!

It's not just dancers who perform at the Haflas - we also have a keen local troupe of Arabic-style drummers known as Kamanana who enjoy the practice of drumming for dancers, a skill in itself.
Along with the many people wanting to show off their "party pieces", there should also be plenty of opportunity for "free dance" (aka "bopping" (in Egyptian stle of course, or "doing your own thing").  We aim to be inclusive and we want to encourage beginners and even non-dancers to get up and have a go during these sessions.  We're here to have fun, after all!  For some pics of the fun and pleasure we have at Haflas and elsewhere, click here:  Belly Dancers having fun!

At a Hafla there is also food, which is catered by a local catering firm.  The supper is usually Arabic themed.
